Accepting Our Differences:All The Parts Are Made To Work Together

More often than not, the differences between people, of different race, colour, creed, religion, age or occupation make for conflict. But God did not make us all the same and our diversity should be a cause for celebration and challenge.

Unity and Diversity in the Body

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.  For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.  Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

1 Corinthians 12: 4-6 & 12-14

Prayer

Lord, we often find it difficult to live with differences among human beings. We harbour prejudices towards those of other races and cultures: we feel threatened by forms of government different from our own: and, we find it difficult to accept the beliefs and practices even of other Christian traditions.

Forgive the subtle ways we contribute to the conflicts of our society and world. Remove the insecurity which leads to our narrow preference for ‘our kind of people’. In its place, give us not only tolerance but a healthy appreciation for what we can learn form those who are different. For we are all of the same humanity, the children of the same Creator.
