The Hidden Cost of Poverty

A report entitled ‘The Hidden Cost of Poverty’ was recently commissioned by the SVP and written by Dr. Micheál Collins, School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, University College Dublin.

The report shows that while most of those living in poverty are of working age there are a large number of children living below the poverty line. About 30% of all those in poverty are aged 17 years and under, averaging about 225,000 children each year. At the other end of the age distribution about 55,000 pensioners live on an income below the poverty line and represent approximately 8% of those living in poverty.  We know the people and the faces and the human experiences behind all of these statistics.  And we also know that this creates the inequities and polarities in our society and further disenfranchises those already on the margins.  Our SVP Conference continues to help those in greatest need in our local area.

We depend on Church gate collections for our income and due to the fact that we have not had them in recent months, our donations are down.  We are very grateful to those who have generously contributed donations to us, particularly over the Covid period.  We want to thank you and to say that we always need your support and we appreciate it greatly.

We cannot do the work without your support.  It makes a huge difference.  If you wish to make a donation to the SVP,  you can contact Adrienne or Una at the parish office, the sacristans in the churches or the priests of the parish.
